about

Don't really like to explain songs I've written, but in this case:

Steve Veg's (Howells) dog (Baggins) had gone missing while we were both living in Concordia and playing for Archie Pelago. Concordia is kind of a last stop before Soweto, if you're coming from the Jo'burg side, where the Shifty studio used to be for a while. This song was written during the time that Steve still had no clues as to where Baggins may be. Baggins was on the Voelvry tour with us and could be partially responsible for me having turned into a dog.

Steve did eventually find his charred body, in a plastic bag, in the veld.
Ouch!

Travel light, Baggins. May the biscuits be with you.

The song is also another example of the machine that is Andrew Cleland and Gary Sparks.

Heavy Heart is taken from The Chrome Sweet Chrome album, the recording of which was initiated by Warrick Sony and completed by Lloyd Ross.

Muchly thank you, once again.
Gary Kerel.

lyrics

heavy heart.

there is a long cold dusty wind that blows
across this land
It’s a wind that twists up ash and sand
inside the heart inside which turn
Those nerves that hurt
the long cold dusty wind blows
like a sandpaper hand chafing this space
and the hollow heart in this place
theres no cupid arrow
There’s just a dart
and the wind that blows
Dry wind blows
Oh what a come down
On this land please god
talking to the dry dry sand
Voices seem to pull apart
Talk tough
The heavy heart
The sun shine
Like a glass of wine
Holds up a heavy heart
A heavy heavy heart
In this season of despair some dogs have pain
some disappear
They leave a space that only loved ones know
and hurt that seems will never go
and there’s a head that feels like
a station an airport a harbour
and thoughts
about destination
It’s a long cold dusty road
The long cold dusty wind still blows
all across this land
the land that mixes blood with sand
don’t you know
sometimes it’s like a gun
the bullets are hard
the bullets are cold
thank god you’ve got a bullet proof soul
